As prb says above, I was told the only way to assess these was by checking the free play at the steering wheel rim. However if I find one that my experience tells me is totally shagged I do use the "inner ball joint" to fail it. If I find the front wheel can move more then about one centimetre I call that excessive, and that much usually causes excessive free play in the steering wheel. Fail if for free play at the steering wheel and let the guy who repairs it decide which part to replace. Sorry to be harping on, but at my last two refresher courses this topic has been dealt with specifically, and the reason it is not on the list is because VOSA don't want it there. Phaetonot, If you are calling it something else to get a failure, then you are making up your own test. If it is shagged in your opinion, that is what advises are for. Then you have done your job correctly, the presenter has been informed how serious it is, and the responsibility is his to get it repaired. If you can catch it on steering wheel free play, all well and good, if not P+A.

OK Jock and Dave. I've not had a refresher course yet, it's due pretty soon. I just took it that the joint on one end of a track rod was called a track rod end, so the joint at the other end would have the same name. So now its just the free play at the steering wheel or P+A

You could have done but you have already jumped ship once have'nt you ;D, if you jump to our place you will need much more than a life jacket LOL ;D You will seriously struggle getting holidays , you might not get paid for your holidays , and you more than likely will be told what to pass and fail and what you should be putting on advisories , like only fast moving items such as tyres and brakes , however I tell um where to get off and do as per the guides , all that happens is the boss doesn't like me ;D, but that's not a problem as I just add him to the list with everyone else who don't like me ;D ;D ;D Billy no mates LOL ;D

I know what you mean Dave, the only comment when I handed in my notice was a communal sigh of relief. They're fed up with me sticking to the rules. Only one who's gonna miss me is the apprentice because I support him against the bullies. That goes above branch level as well. Comments from regional manager like "you shouldn't have any trouble hitting steering and susp targets, you've got a test lane!" and " The scheme average fails for brakes is X percent, why do you only fail half that?" I test the car as it's presented, not how he wishes it was! Still Two half days and one full day to go! Then I can start moaning about the new firm
