A customer handed me this snippet today: (I'm not sure what newspaper it came from)
Drivers face computer crash chaos
by Jo Macfarlane
THOUSANDS of motorists will be unable to tax their cars after the MoT computer crashed for the third time in two months.
Three days after the latest breakdown, some garages have been told they will not be able to use it until Tuesday.
This means the computer will have been down for just under a week. Garages have been told the £26million system, introduced in February, needs to "recover".
Motorists need certificates to prove older cars have passed the MoT before they can be taxed.
Furious garage owners are losing thousands of pounds because they have been forced to turn away customers. Instead of computer-printed MoT certificates they are having to use an emer- gency back-up system involving hours of paper- work. Some are writing temporary certificates for desperate motorists but many post offices will not accept them.
The Vehicle Operating Services Agency, which regulates the system, said yesterday that 98 per cent of test centres are back online, but garages disputed this. Test centre manager Colin Evans said: "Some customers don't have a hope of hav- ing their MoTs done. There's a huge backlog."

Some are writing temporary certificates for desperate motorists but many post offices will not accept them. Has anyone had any instances of customers returning saying that the Post Office wouldn't accept the VT20 ET. I issued about 20 of them during emergency testing, only three have returned to have them replaced with the printed VT20. I know for definite several of the customers needed an MOT certificate to get their tax at the end of the month. Surely the PO had briefed their staff that there was a possibility that these certificates might make an appearance. I remember when we first issued the new style A4 VT30 last year, some customers said that the PO staff weren't sure what they actually were and had to go and ask their supervisors.
