Hi people I recently purchased a 1967 Mk1 DAF 44 that im looking to put back on the road so obviously it will need an MOT. Ive noticed that there are only seat belts for the front 2 seats and that these seat belts are rather unusual. They are fixed belts (no retractors) and the big thing they only have two mounting points. One end attached conventionally to the B pillar. The two halves of the belt buckle together with this type of buckle. The buckle strap mounts to the transmission tunnel using a hook and eye bolt like this. This is the original factory fitment. Will it pass an MOT with this arrangement or am I going to have to retrofit 3 point belts? Thanks Paul

A belt which restrains the upper part of the body (but need not include a lap belt) is all you will require,no rear seat belts are required due to the vehicles age & date of first use

Hi Pauldaf44 Welcome to the forum, In this case you only need 2 belts, drivers and passenger front irrespective of the number of mounting points, but there is a need for the belts to restrain the upper part of the body and to be free from other defects which are part of the test. These belts you have pictures of; look like vintage or aircraft style belts which are fine as long as they restrain the upper part of the body. Can you tell us if they will restrain the upper part of the body?

Yes they do restrain the upper half of the body just not the lower. Essentially just the diagonal strap of a lap and diaganol seat belt.
Although they do seem fairly lethal to me as in an accident you'd just slide under them and get some nice injury to your upper body. Because of this I think I am going to fit 3 point seat belts. Are homemade mounting points allowed?

Hi Pauldaf44. Would it not be easier to fit the factory ones as original.

These two pointers are the originals according to the club they where only fitted to a few very early cars. Mine is a mk1 and as such the numbers remaining are in single figures.

IF there is a top mounting point on the B pill er,and it may be a big IF. which may be behind a plastic trim;you can use the 2 lower factory anchorage points and that one, Manufactures do sometimes provide mounting points on load bearing members with a fixing(captive nut) welded to the anchorage points but never installed seat belts This would be safer and straight forward, failing that i would rather advise the fitting 3 point seat belts by a specialist. Without knowing your engineering knowledge, having them fitted by an expert would be; in my opinion the best course

It sounds like it has a shoulder belt Nitros, Its the lap belt thats not there. Same applies though, make sure the fixing point for the third bolt is structural
