My brother in law has just had his 2003 clio van fail on the rear axle bushes & garage quoted £230 labour for the replacement, thought I would ask how many NT's have actually failed or advised on this item or is the garage after a fast buck?

Can't say that problems would not arise with them, but never failed them myself. Dave

I've now seen the refusal,it states the rubber bush bonding is deteriorated, resulting in excessive movement. Also failed on emissions, but no engine temperature was taken!little bit naughty in my honest opinion

Engine temperature doesn't have to be taken IE with the oil dipstick probe. But the engine has to be warm. Our machine prompts us for the engine temp and how we know its hot. Like temp gauge showed warm, fans cut in or hoses felt warm. But the parework will show the method ew entered.
If its diesel we put the probe in to prove its warm enough. So just because the paperwork says no temp measurement, it doesn't mean the engine was cold!

It does state no temperature taken, how can the nt be sure the engine is wam enough, especially as this is a turbo diesel

TBH on a diesel smoke test if it failed I would do it again with the temp probe in the oil, as machine won't let test begin until hot enough

Hi Dave
As I said If we don't use the probe machine makes us wait 40 seconds. It does this to put us off bypassing. But if we wait the 40 seconds it lets the test begin BUT it does print on the results sheet " Engine/oil temperature check bypassed" or summut similar.
On the gas tests it lists the method of checking the temp Hoses felt warm, gauge showed warm or cooling fans cut in.

Failed one a couple of years back but they were bad not failed one since though, not that a common problem but you would have to see h bushes yourself and see hat there like.23O labour sounds a bit steep.

Have never failed clios for rear axle bushes. On the gas/smoke test I always carry out mine at the end of the test when the engine should be at operating temp............

If its the 1500dci diesel model with the dipstick attached to oil filler cap it can be a bit of a struggle to get some temp probes deep enough to get a reading and it may be down to this; why no temp was taken,
It would not prevent a test being carried out as long as the necessasary steps have been taken to confirm the engine is hot enough to test in my opinion,
As for the rear axle bushs to fail ;there must of been something seriously wrong with them as we run 2 in a family business doing 30k miles a year and had no issues, But you never know what the vehicle has been subjected to or abuse its had, so anythings possible i suppose

Hey, I've never failed Clio II rear bushes, i've noted they do peel a very small amount, but nothing to the extent of meeting the failure criteria. On saying that, it doesn't mean its impossible for them to ever fail

The refusal stated that the n/s/r & o/s/r suspension arm bushes bonding had failed! still looking for the suspension arms,I found the rear axle beam is that close enough?

I'm wondering if the item failed was the rear bush on the FRONT suspension arm? Clio I did today had a torsion beam axle

Unless they change between models the clio doesn't have rear suspension arms. Beam axle, could be failed for rear axle bushes, or shock absorber bushes
