This picture is a suspension bottom ball joint that suddenly let go on car we recovered. The owner was terrified,on asking if it had had a service recently the reply was no it had a Mot.how can this be on such a saftey item. I put the blame on VOSA for the pass and advise it is in my opinon passing the buck from thier selves to other folk!. Why the ball joints with the dust covers completley split with no movement is a pass and advise. However i believe to do just that sooner or later it will result it a accident that will end the live or lives through the total irrisponsible method stated. What is the prob,in my strong belief that the broke dust boot [gaiter] acts like a funnel and channels the water and road debri into the joint that then settles solid below the ball.[working it's way up out of the joint] the road salt does not help and water without salt will freeze that will not help the final failure with expansion contraction on a bump. I SAY FAIL the joint ON ANY SUSPENSION DUST BOOT [GAITOR] BROKE SPLIT . Veiws please to pass the buck back to Vosa.

Pic like that in the lastest MOT Matters newspaper we got last friday. Same vehicle by any chance?
They're bound to be aware of this but look what happened when fuel caps were first brought into the test. Always the same, they wait until theres a fatality before changing things.
Sure my boss mentioned that years ago split gaitors was a fail as was insecure batteries. Another itme that needs to be changed from pass and advise to FAIL.

Spanner yes indeed we used to fail track rod end and suspension ball joint dust covers[gaitors] and insecure batterys. Now i see Vosa in road side checks in a tv advert saying the dangers of loose batterys in accidents causeing fires so why not a fail now, somthing is not right. Well you get your matters of testing early unless ours is lost as we have not had ours yet. No i have not seen any pix of the joint.be intrested on seeing it and if it is the same make. I can only put up pix in other forums with paint shop pro. So admin will put some up.

A split / missing suspension ball joint boot seems more dangerous than a split steering rack gaiter, yet one is an RfR, the other isn't All we can do at present is to pass and advise. As long as the joint shows no signs of excessive play or movement...

Well in my eyes any joint movement with a split or broken dust cover is a fail, more so with some heavy designed antiroll bars and fixings, now theres a thought with the new play detectors. After testing if a pass and advise is given under the existing circumstances and the car on its return trip home was involved in a fatal accident with many lives say a coach etc who is to blame i think VOSA If it is brought to there attention.

All we can do at present is to pass and advise. As long as the joint shows no signs of excessive play or movement... Problem is with excessive corrosion haveing set in you may well get no movement at all.

Received ours MOTesting to-day interesting joint failure, i see the antiroll bar link joint let go! How many more ball joint failures have there been that are not made known i wounder. Tom that is a very good point with the RFR with the rack gaiter and not with the ball joint gaiter.
