I retested a vehicle some years ago. A plate had been welded to the chassis with the cleanest weld bead I had seen for quite a while. On closer inspection, the 'weld' turned out to be a bead of silicon that had been sprayed with underseal to give the impression of a welded repair! With gentle tap & a scrape, the plate fell off to reveal the original chassis fracture!

Bit of an old post the above now, but one of the recent seminars I attended the spokes person from Thatcham, who carry out research for vehicles designs and repair methods illustrated the latest techniques and designs, of how a modern vehicle is bonded and riveted together, the panels remaining which are spot welded by specialist equipment will make mot repairs very time consuming, and expensive to repair in the near future. VOSA's minimum standards as they call them, i.e. continous seem weld around a patch repair will be a distant memory. From the designs and methods of assembly I have seen, it looks like many small garages will not be repairing vehicles structures in the future?

ssounds interesting ! can you elaborate more on this . repairs im sure will change greatly especially with newer cars where some panels are bonded rather than welder.
