Hi All. Question for you If an mot station that was established in 1985 that has a one man testing lane with a pit looses its licence because the tenant leaves and takes all the kit with him can the station be reauthorised without having to fit an ATL?

Thanks both Most helpful Are ATL test lane brake testers always plate type or are there roller types too? And could an ATL lane incorporate a pit for class 4? (As the roof is too low for a ramp)

Thanks Hayden, however like your good self I use the old fashioned method of requiring manual help of an assistant ;D I have seen these auto shaker plates in action with regards VOSA's DVD's, not really sure I like them to be honest, but I suppose I would need to try an assessment of a vehicles components before a final decision can be made, although a VE many years ago told me in his experience they did apply too much load to suspension components and he had experienced damage to vehicles because of them, maybe they have learned since those days ;D Dave

I Had a boston pit mounted hydraulic shaker plate and it was fantastic. You know when passats etc have a lower ball joint worn and you can hear it but its hard to tell which one? Piece of cake with a shaker plate ,finds it straight away. VOSA say you have to jack up and bar too though but I never found anything with a bar that you couldn't see on the plates.

I think you will probably find that the Plate Brake Tester would mean it was a OPTL (One Person Test Lane) not an ATL (Automated Test Lane), for it to be ATL the Brake Tester must weigh the vehicle, I'm not aware of any brake testers on ATL stations that aren't Roller Brake Testers. Either type of lane could be with a fitted with a lift or a pit provided the approved SPID's were fitted in accordance with VOSA's regulations. I test with all three types of lanes, 2 person, OPTL and ATL, and there are benefits and drawbacks to each, however on the whole using OPTL or ATL makes identifying worn suspension joints etc easier.
