Hi My question is can a car fail its mot on the type of nuts and bolts that hold it together ? - A friend was recently warned that his classic car did not have the right type of nylock nuts fitted!! I cant see this can be right as what if the car was low mileage and as originally built ?? Hopefully someone can enlighten me Cheers Ray

hi ray, welcome to the forum. if the car is as originally built and the " locking devices " (nuts ) are not damaged or insecure then there should not be a problem. what part of the car were they on and did the tester fail or pass and advise them as you said your Friend was warned.

Hi Hayden Thanks for that - I thought as much - he said the tester stated under new rules he could have condemed the car because the nylocks "were not of the correct specification" !! how the tester would know what specification of nuts or bolds should be for every vehicle is beyond me and I think he was being over the top Ray

The car , (Triumph Stag) failed on headlight aim and emissions I believe - the tester "warned" him in general conversation that he could have failed it on these "nylock" nuts but was not specific as to which ones ! Ray

hi ray, if the tester could have failed it then he should have, otherwise he is not doing his job properly, as he didn't i would assume there was nothing to fail.

Hi Ray, I think the NT is talking a load of bull, I remember watching a VOSA DVD were the trainer said at the time that the mot test is not concerned with the type of locking/retaining device, as some, i.e. locking compound cannot be proven to be effective, only the presence of it, i.e. split pin, nylock nut presence, anything else is a 'Pass and Advise'
