Hello. I have recently purchased a car and am looking to obtain some history of the vehicle via old MOT certificates. The information I would like is prior to 1998. Can I obtain some data or copies of certificates from a goverment agency. I know the old certificates were hand written, but surely some records were sent from the the test centres to a "central" location. Will I be able to get these older certificates. I am looking for then to verify the history, ie mileage the car had covered each year etc. Any assistance would be greatly received. Many thanks

If I am right a VTS only needs to keep the carbon copies (Hand written) pass/fail certificates for 18 months, after that they are in the bin.
It is possible that the hand written copies could have been transferred to Computerisation via VOSA or Siemens, I do remeber a few years back seeing something on Computerisation, but in that event you would probably need to speed to either Siemens of VOSA.
Siemens tel = 0845 071 1973
VOSA tel = 0300 123 9000

Statistical data was submitted to the area office each month. This contained date of test, registration, pass/fail, failure category ie brakes, steering, lights, etc
Some test stations may still hold their counterfoil pass certificate books - we still have some of ours!
You may find that you vehicle is on a garage's invoicing system... Although 10 years ago most smaller garages still hand wrote their paperwork.
Have you contacted previous keeper to see if he kept using the same garage each year for the MOT test ?
What about leaving a partial reg & vin here so that our members with efficient computer systems could see if they tested your vehicle ? * don't leave full details of reg & vin for obvious reasons *

Hello. Thanks for the suggestion. Partial numbers are listed below
Reg No GRN 4_ _ W VIN GAE_A_ 0_ _ 300
The vehicle would have been in the Lancashire / Merseyside area in the period I am interested in (before 1998)
All assitance would greatly received.
Many thanks

I've got nothing beginning with GRN on my system... and I'm in south Wales anyway.
It is a long shot, but perhaps someone might be able to help.
