Anyone got any news on when the EGA is likely to get connected to a Smart Card reader ? All the aggro involved to get the EGA up to spec., with hardware updates, conformity checks, etc but still not connected. I'm beginning to think that the EGA manufacturers have an interest in there not being a smart card reader attached because they won't get their annual fee for the VOSA vehicle data updates - the information will be sourced from the VTS Device instead... How much did we all spend to get the EGAs up to spec. ? I think ours was extortionately expensive. No doubt we will change our EGA before the link-up is made. Then we will probably have to pay for a conformity check all over again

Hi Tom. Dont even go there, I personally hope that it never happens. As you know our smart cards are read and written to every time we do test, adding another reader /writer into the system will completely screw our smart cards up, since last June I am now on my third card, they are not that durable. I think the idea of the EGA smart card system has been quietly dropped because of this unreliablity. We renewed our EGA about eighteen months ago and the subject of being able to use a smart card device has never been mentioned. Also if it was introduced it would make the expensive laser printer that is built into our machine redundant as there would no requirement for a printout, the readings would be transferred to the central database via the cards. The annual software update wont stop as it is important in keeping the machine up to date, if you think about it how often does the EGA need VSI??, only when the BET test critiria is not met and that is fairly rare we find, maybe at the moment one in twenty vehicles. If it happens will it stop at the EGA? no, the brake tester (roller and decelerometer) will be next!!.
Like I said, don't even go there!!!
Regards Henry.

In that case, we are out of pocket for the expense in preparing the EGA for conformity. MOT Computerisation was not to cause VTS's any unnecessary expense...

On the subject of expense, we had to have additional phone line (and number) installed because we have a very efficient digital phone system which handles all other analogue devices (streamline machine, fax etc) quite happily but was deemed by Vosa as unsuitable for Mot computerisation. This new line is of course analogue and is used solely for the Mot modem, whilst there are no calls charged to us we still have to pay for the line rental quarterly charges etc and the original installation. How would you categorize this?? unnecessary or necessary expense?? Since last June this has cost us more than the mods to the old EGA conformity upgrade and its ongoing.......!!
