A customer requested a duplicate certificate for the old-style vt20 that she had lost. I found the details in my register & issued a computerised certificate.
She asked me if she could now tax her car online using the computerised duplicate...
Anyone know if you can ?

Interesting one that, I don't see why not. When you issue the duplicate you've had to enter all the details into the system and when it prints out new certificate it will have a test number and bar code.

Yes you can - my wife did it.
But, did you know that if somebody requires an expired duplicate (ie. for an insurance claim after the insurance company loses the original certificate) the system wont be able to do it for you, nor your local office? I had to break the seal to my spare old style pad, write out an old style certificate, after getting permission in triplicate (and in blood!!!).
Crazy....!

Guess they'll get round to sorting that out at a later date - like 2009

A couple of customers have telephoned to request a duplicate certificate. To save any inconvenience, I issued the duplicates during spare time between tests. Trouble is, the customers have not turned up to collect the certificates I am not out of pocket from this, as duplicates no longer use a test slot - as they used to when we had to hand write them. But I am wondering if the customers have become wise & managed to tax their vehicles online knowing a computerised certificate had now been issued ? Perhaps in future I should wait for them to call in to the VTS & make them hang around until I finish the test in progress ? At least I'll get the £10 then !

Is it really necessary to have a duplicate certificate ?
The computerised MOT certificate is just a receipt. The MOT status is held on a database that can be viewed online. Vehicles can be taxed online without taking any reference of the VT20 at all.
Actually, come to think of it, I don't think it is necessary to have the original MOT certificate, either! As long as the vehicle passes the annual test, is any paper evidence necessary ?
