A query has been raised on another message thread motforum.proboards44.com/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&thread=1127028359I was wondering if anyone can come up with the answer ? Q. In what situation(s) do you think that the RfR menu option 'Items not tested - Headlamp Aim' should be used ?(Apparently VOSA are currently saying that it should not be used when a headlamp bulb is not working, as the system won't allow a partial retest (minor items). When the 'Not tested' option is selected, the computer system has been programmed to assume that a full retest must be carried out).

When should headlamp aim not tested be used ?
I think in the following instances:
1. When headlamp(s) are not working 2. When headlamp(s) are missing 3. When headlamp(s) are insecure 4. When headlamp(s) are masked out
any others ?

5. When the light output is well below that required to illuminate the road ahead.

6. If the headlamps are of the 'pop-up' type, but don't 'pop-up'...

I must have missed this thread when reading back through the forums. I wish I hadn't.
I tested a Mondeo on Thursday lunchtime, it failed on:-
o/s/f tyre below 1.6mm o/s/r tyre canvas exposed o/s number plate light not working o/s/f position light not working o/s/f headlamp beam image incorrect and n/s/f dipped beam not working, so I automatically put n/s/f headlamp aim not tested, because it wasn't.
Now as far as I'm concerned the list for minor items includes, wheels and tyres, headlamp aim and lamps. All the above fit into that list one way or another, so yesterday morning when the car came back for partial retest I checked all the failed items, logged on, and the system kept throwing out, "Not minor item". So I phoned my VE, it went into answerphone, phoned area office who told me it was because you had to use equipment to measure items, I said that can't be right, Headlamp aim is under minor items as is emissions and they have to be measured, so they gave me the number of the VE who was covering my area. He said that all he'd had this problem many times, that the items were covered under minor items, and just put it down as a full retest and pass it straight away, but in future don't bother using the Headlamp Aim Not Tested failure.

Farcical, isn't it ! If a vehicle fails on headlamp aim then it can be re-tested under the 'Minor Items - Partial Retest'. But if you try to do the MOT test correctly and book down 'Headlamp aim - Not tested' when the bulb has blown, for example, then you aren't able to perform a 'Partial Retest - Minor Items' ! When should we use the 'Headlamp Aim - Not Tested' option ? If we are all being told not to use it, then why is it still available as an option ?

This is a question I'll be bringing up when they eventually get around to sorting out my refresher course, it was due in February.
