O.K. some questions to all you stations that are now live ?
1, have you lost any business from going live ?? if so how much ??
2, how much has it slowed you down ?? amount before ?? amount after ??
3, if you run an appointment system does it work well ?? do people turn up on time, and if there late what do you do
4, has everyone around you gone live ?? if not do the reg customers go elsewhere ??

1. Yes - hard to judge at the moment exactly how much.
2. Adds at least 10 - 15 minutes to each test.
3. N/A
4. I'm the only one around here - closest is 30 yards away and has big signs outside offering free re-tests. Doesn't exactly help my trade when people ask how much for a re-test and I tell them full price. Regular customers are not happy but stay with me.

1, have you lost any business from going live ?? if so how much ??
A little, but this has been more than balanced out by the increase in retest fee. We used to charge £35 for test with free retest within fortnight. We now charge £35 for test & £35 for full retest.
2, how much has it slowed you down ?? amount before ?? amount after ??
We have always booked MOT's in every hour on the hour. At first, when we went computerised we were taking more than an hour. We have now got it down to 45 minutes or so. Some cars are proving difficult to register, and some have lots of failure items to select from the database. The 15 minutes provides a safety buffer to accomodate these occurances. We also use this time for performing partial retests. Our system seems to be working ok so far.
3, if you run an appointment system does it work well ?? do people turn up on time, and if there late what do you do
All our tests are by appointment. Our VE has always advised to do it that way! Most days, there are vehicles left early in the morning for afternoon bookings. If someone doesn't turn up on time, then we do one of the vehicles that have been left with us. When the late arrival turns up, we may try to squeeze it in, give them the appointment slot the other vehicle had, or re book for another day.
4, has everyone around you gone live ?? if not do the reg customers go elsewhere ??
Only about 20% have gone live locally. We have had no problem retaining the regular customers. We have even seen a large number of new customers.

We have been computerised for a couple of months, and out of all the people that we have booked in mot's for and explained that there is a free retest only on certain items, only 2 people have taken the vehicle somewhere else for an mot test. But a garage very close to us is also computerised and they are just as busy as us, in fact we are doing more mot's now than ever. We are also by appointment and book an mot for every hour, we also try to get a couple left all day so if one doesn't turning up you do another instead, so you got a later appointment free.

Went live mid Agust and I'd say MOT's were up rather than down. Many garages in area were doing large quantity of tests per day but of course now big brothers watching they can't knock through so many which results in more for us smaller garages.
Price has also risen £40 seems to be average cost for MOT and £20 for re-test. Many though south of us nearer Aberdeen town centre are charging Full price and same again for re-test. Further north here theres still a good few not yet live and doing tests for £35 but only a matter of time I think and we'll see full price accross the board.
Should point out that not a single customer has complained about our price increase or re-test fee once system has been explained to them. Only comment we've had was from a dealer!
