New guy with what's hopefully a simple question... I have a car registered in August 1992, which I'm aware means that it's got to sit an emissions test for cars with a catalyst. Now, the engine in my car is from a 1991 model and when I put it in my vehicle I didn't re-fit the catalyst. My understanding is that because the engine is older than the shell/chassis, the whole vehicle should sit an emissions test in keeping with the age of the engine - i.e. a non-cat test. Previously this hasn't been a problem, as a friendly local garage always did my test and put the vehicle through a non-cat test for the reason explained above. I've recently moved house - so want to check that this information is correct, so that I don't end up looking a pillock when I take the car to a new place for its MOT. If anyone can recommend an understanding test station in the Cambridge area I'd appreciate it please! Andrew

The vehicle is subject to an emissions test to the limits of the older of the engine or the vehicle. Proof of age of the engine will be required. Many cars pre 1994 don't need catalyst tests & your vehicle should have the same emissions test whatever test station it goes to. You can get an overview of the emissions test online at: www.motuk.co.uk/manual_730.htm

I have an Audi S2, registered on August 4th 1992. Does this mean that my car would need to meet an emmissions test for a cat equipped vehicle or not? The engine is used on this model from 1990 through to late 1992 so some cars (complete with cats) it seems are not required to have a cat test and some are?
Can you clarify what the situation is and also what is shown on the VTS as i am in the middle of trying to understand whether I can lose my cats altogether or if i would need to retain them in order to get through the MOT.
Any help much appreciated.
Also - would it be possible to verify what is shown on the VTS for my vehicle (in terms of requires a cat test or not) I can supply the reg by PM.
Cheers S2driveruk

In general (there may be variations depending on vehicle type): Spark ignition vehicles first used on or after 1st August 1992 will require a BET test (a quick CAT test) limits: CO<=0.2%, HC<=200ppm, Lambda 0.97 to 1.03.
If it fails to meet these limits, a full test is required that has various limits depending on the vehicle tested.
1/Aug/1992 to 31/Jul/1995: if an exact match is found in the analyser data / emissions book then those limits must be used. If no exact match, then a non-CAT test is done to limits CO<=3.5%, HC<=1200ppm
1/Aug/1995 to 31/Aug/2002: either a vehicle specific cat test is done, or a default cat test CO<=0.3%, HC<=200, Lambda 0.97 to 1.03, idle co<0.5%. This depends on whether vehicle is in analyser data / emissions book.
To confirm whether vehicle requires a CAT test, then model, engine size & engine code (plus possibly some other information) will be required.

Have answered s2driveruk via PM. As an exact match can be found in the emissions database for his Audi, it is subject to vehicle-specific cat test.
