A question for the MOT public:
When you take your car to a garage for an MOT, can you tell us do you know what gets checked on your vehicle....

I am buying a Japanese car the speedo is in KMS. Do I need to convert to MPH to pass the m.o.t

No KPH is no problem. Make sure the headlamp beam pattern conforms to RHD specs but IIRC Japan is RHD anyway....

You'll need to add a rear fog lamp & illuminated switch to most Japanese imports. Make sure the Rear Fog Lamp is fitted to the Offside, though

The vehichle if first imported will need a SVA test this will bring into lign for fitment the things like fog light, fuel filler, speedo face to MPH tyres etc. If three years old or more it will then need a MOT. Good luck with your purchase.
