Why is the inspection of the rear foglamp only confined to the one fitted to the offside (or centre) of the vehicle ?

It is to do with the fact that we drive on the left. We overtake to the right.
So in foggy conditions, we need to know where the right side of the vehicle is.
Problems may occur with vehicles with a foglamp on the left and the right, but the right one stops working. Overtaking this vehicle may result in a collision!
Not sure about overtaking a vehicle with a centre fog lamp, though!
Saying that, it would be dangerous to overtake anything in the fog!
Perhaps I should have said 'pass' instead of 'overtake'.

I'd have thought overtaking a vehicle in conditions foggy enough to need fog lights and not see the body of the vehicle it's attached to would be classed as dangerous driving.

What about peugeots that have the fog lamp in the centre?? Now thats something to re consider if the width of the vehicle is the main reason for fog lamps to be fitted to the right hand side ,

Are you sure that you didn't mean that position lamps are there to show the presence and width of the vehicle when viewed on the road?

The fog light is there Daveg, to show the presence of the vehicle in fog thick enough to mean the position lamps are not visible at a reasonable distance. It makes sense to fit it on the offside, and I've no idea why it should be centrally mounted on some vehicles.

It would make sense to fit it to the offside here jock, but in most country's they drive on the right. The only reason i can think is why its in the middle is down to production costs and it would not matter which country it is in if its in the middle it is legal either way,no matter which side of the road the car is driven on.Your guess is as good as mine

I thought JasMotors was saying that the Fog Lamps are there to show the width of the vehicle? I was always lead to believe from the lighting and signalling regulations that the position lamps were there to show the presence and width of a vehicle, which is why I said position lamps. Daveg

Simply because we do not need more than one, two could be confused with brake lamps, position centre or right is to do with the side we drive on (left).
