Recently my car was mot tested at my local garage and they now have the new computer printer for the certificates. The test was done in about 1/2 hour but the mechanic had to wait for about 15 mins before the system would produce my certificate. This system seems very slow and must waste a lot of the mechanics time.

Your tester shouldn't need to spend any time hanging around. The MOT test takes varying lengths of time to complete - it depends on the condition of the vehicle. Newer ones can be done in around half an hour, but old bangers may take much, much longer. Once the test has been completed, the results need to be entered into the MOT computer. This is sometimes a little time consuming - especially for the mechanic / MOT tester who may be a computerphobe! The computer system does have its benefits - you can tax your car online, the fail criterior are printed in a standardised form, & the printouts are easier to read than scruffy hand written ones you may have been used to!
