hi i took my mondeo for mot a few months ago, but the inspector wouldn't pass it because the number plate wasn't spaced right and my front tyre was on the wrong way around i told him that the number plates passed last year at another garage, but he said that the laws have got strickter and that he can't pass it. he showed me the writing on the wheel to show that it was going backwards. he couldn't turn it around because he doesn't do tyres. i took it to the tyre garage and they changed the tyre around. they told me they have got a special discount for mot's today, so i said for them to do the mot for me. they said the shocks were leaking oil and it was very dangerous to drive. they said it must be done straight away. they did the shocks and gave me an mot pass. I can't beleive the other garage miss the dangerous shocks, but try failing me for my number plate spaces ?

Wayne, without seeing the vehicle firsthand, it is difficult to say who was right & who was wrong.
The rules for number plate spacing have been in the MOT manual for a number of years. It is not something that has been added in the last year.
If your shock absorbers were leaking, the first tester should have seen it and depending on how bad the leak was either advise it or fail it.

Did you actually see the leaking shocks yourself.
As for the number plate if you vehicle has the newest type number plate should look like
AB51 ABC
not like
AB 51 ABC this is a fail.
A123 ABC
Then the space between the 3 and the A should be double the space of the other spacings if it looks like
A 1 2 3 ABC this would fail or
A 123ABC this would fail.

Although its difficult to say when you haven't seen the car do you not think its a bit odd that the tyre center just happened to have a special offer on MOT's and then it promptly failed on shocks, something these type of places are famous for ? If the first tester was diligent enough to spot the incorrectly fitted tyre I feel sure he would have spotted the leaking shocks .

the space in the number plates is the middle. without quoting my full reg, it looks like:
N777WWW the real parts of my reg are N..7W..
the space in the middle between the 7 and the W is wide at the bottom, and narrow at the top. but that is because of the shapes of the letters and numbers. the gap at the top is the same as the spaces in the rest of the reg.
I know my shock absorbers were covered in oil, because the tyre man brought them out to show me. It was a good job they keep shock absorbers and could fit them straight away, because my car would be too dangerous to drive away.

That number plate doesn't meet the MOT requirements.
Tyres must be fitted according to the manufacturers sidewall instructions - some state 'outside' or '>> rotation >>' etc. The rotation direction is the way the tyre rotates when driving forward.
There have been tales of oil being purposely sprayed onto shock absorbers or brake hydraulics to make it look like a leak.
I'm with 'motman' on this. Your first tester probably did the job correctly. The tyre garage missed items & created fictitious faults to bring in extra revenue.

Thank you for your help.
Perhaps the tyre garage did spray the shock absorbers with oil. I shall try to watch my car being mot tested next year.
I have just bought new number plates. What a palavour! The original number plates had the Ford garages name on. They must have been on there from new!
wayne.

ok wayne i will have to ask ? did the second MoT garage pass the old Number Plates or did you do these before the MoT?? the number plates didn't fail at the tyre garage. they changed my tyre around, did an mot and said i needed new shock absorbers on the back because they were dangerous. i bought the new number plates last week because my old ones looked tatty, and i had to take my passport and log book to the spares parts shop! the new number plates have smaller numbers and letters, but there is a bigger gap in the middle than on my old ones. my car somehow looks newer with a new set of number plates. i will have to keep polishing it every weekend, now!
