hi testers, getting used to computerisation & now back onto the cars.. Noticing more coil springs breaking especially on renault clio. On the front they break at the bottom in the cup and you have to feel the spring right down into the muck to find the jagged edge. With the rears it is easier to spot, it is common for them to break right at the bottom.

Noticing more coil springs breaking especially on renault clio. Megane's and Lagunas are the same, and the spring breaks in the identical place. We've got so many speed bumps/sleeping policemen these days, is it any wonder?

Finding more than ever broken springs on fords, vauxhall, renaults, mercs. Some are difficult to spot as hidden at base of seating and may only be 1/2 a coil. Good hunting and be careful out there Tony

Take care when replacing coil springs, too!
A mechanic in a neighbouring garage lost the tops of a number of his fingers when the coil spring on the suspension leg that he was removing shifted & pinned his hand up inside the suspension turret.

Anyone come across Peugeot 406 fronts that take out brake hose &c.v.boot when they break? that`s why some later Pugs & larger Citroens have a plastic "cage" fitted to catch the bits

We have had a large number of snapped springs too..... BMW 3-series rear springs which are particularly difficult to see,but as said before you can feel the bottom of the spring to check for sharp edges. Various Renaults, including both front springs on my own Lag 1. .Espace front springs,Clio rear springs etc etc! Mercedes C-Class front springs, which are a right sod to change. We now borrow the Merc special tool to replace it as without it the job is a nightmare. Ford Mondeo and late shape Escort front springs. We have had one 406 front spring snap, and as said before the corner of the car collapses and the spring takes out various other components!.The Picasso had a re-call for the front springs, and this is when the cages were fitted to stop the spring from becoming displaced. And various other one offs......

We had a Fiat Stilo which failed on two front springs broken. Done the job, then the customer had a recall, and when we seen it, they had fitted an extra bottom spring holder, to stop the spring coming down into the tyre.

Have a close inspection of the replacement coils you are fitting... Aftermarket ones often have a small un-protected groove in the paintwork that's left when the paint hooks are removed. It may seem a coincidence, but this is very close to where the broken spring failed Quality springs have the benefit of an additional brush of paint over the bare nick. The bare metal nick allows corrosion to eat into the coil at that point. It creates a weakness similar to that of scoring a sheet of glass or a ceramic tile. When the corrosion is deep enough, 'BANG!', the spring breaks...

The truth is they are just crap springs, when I worked for Vauxhall some years back even brand new cars were breaking springs like they were going out of fashion, yes I admit that speed controlling measures like humps, sleeping police men don't help, but take a look at the BEST REAR COIL SPRINGS out there?
Which are they you ask, simple
Rear Springs on the Fiat's, they rust and rust and rust forever but never never seen one break yet, been testing them for years.

working for bmw coil spring failiures seem more of a feature than a fault! e36 and 46 in-particular, z3's and 4's come under that banner being that they copy the running gear from those models and the e30, but its also a factor on the later x3's and x5's. theres the usual road apendages but the larger the road wheel, lower profile tyre and bm's insistance on fitting run flat tyre systems seem to exagerate the problem.
