Is it just our garage We seem to get a lot of Renault vehicles with broken ends on the coil springs, does any one else fail a lot of these? We do also MOT a lot of Renaults, Vauxhalls and Fords.

I've found quite a few of these, too. More on Renaults than any other makes. Take care when handling, some leave sharp/jagged edges at the broken end.
RfR 'A coil spring incomplete, cracked or fractured.'

We had a customer in last week with a 98 Laguna who wanted a quote for some MOT repairs on a failure given by a local garage, mentioning no names but apparently "you can't get better, and they're the ones to trust". It had failed on headlights (no beam pattern, the plastic lenses were really badly scratched and faded) and one of the seat belt stalks wouldn't locate. As we had to fit new headlights and he didn't have the time to take it back for a retest, he asked us to test it for him. I found a broken spring in the usual place. He had already spent quite a lot on new headlights and couldn't really afford to have the spring done, so he decided to take it back to the original garage for retest.
He popped in yesterday pleased that his car had passed, and booked it in next week to have the spring replaced.
Call me a cynic, but isn't the coil spring one of the first thing you check on Renaults when you jack up the front suspension?

scenics etc - come across a lot of broken shock absorbers lately - snapped at the top inside the plastic sleeve just where you can't see it so would be missed on test but knock like mad on the road
