Apart from the obvious - lights, steering, brakes, etc. How much is an assistant allowed to do ?
Can the assistant perform the emissions test or brake test ?
Does anyone know ?

Can the assistant perform the emissions test or brake test ? Don't think so, it would be classed (iirc) as a split test. Graham

Check with the MOT Testing Guide.
Appendix 8.3 - Incorrect Test Methods
Split Testing is when an NT who signs a VT20 or VT30 personally assesses some, but not all the testable items and has relied on another person's assessment of the remaining items. 30 pts if the other person was an NT at that VTS or 50 pts if the other person was NOT an NT at that VTS.
The tester did not personally: carry out a brake test on the service brake - 45 pts carry out a brake test on the parking brake - 15 pts
The tester did not personally: carry out a stage in the emissions test appropriate to the vehicle - 3 pts / stage
Points make prizes And the prizes these points make isn't as nice as Brucie's Bonus.

Amazing - isn't it?
You have to be a qualified MOT tester to be able to hold the revs on a cat test within the limits!
