Hello all,
I know this question has been asked before, but are you sure aftermarket HIDs will fail the MOT for not having self-levellers and washers?
The technical pen picture from March 2011 which is often quoted does not say they have to be fitted, only that-
"The Department for Transport considers that after-market systems should be required to meet the same safety standards as that applied in respect of these lamps at vehicle Type Approval. Therefore, in order to pass the MOT test, vehicles fitted with after-market HID systems would also need to be fitted with headlamp cleaning and self-levelling systems."
At no point does it say they MUST be fitted, only that they would like it to be so.
The MOT Inspection Manual (Jan 2012) says-
"Vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspension or headlamp self levelling system.
Where such systems are fitted, they must work; however, it is accepted that it may not be possible to readily determine the functioning of self levelling systems. In such cases, the benefit of the doubt must be given."
Again, does not say they MUST be fitted, and the RFR only refers to "inoperative or otherwise obviously defective", it does not mention "missing", as the RFRs do for other items.
I know there are compliance issues with the Construction And Use and RVL regulations, but can anyone point me to a VOSA document which specifically states that aftermarket HIDs must have levellers and washers to pass the MOT?
