The testers that use this forum are fairly conscientious guys many of whom want to see your car pass with the minimum amount of fuss but we need a bit of help sometimes from you, the customer. (We refer to you in our trade-speak as ‘vehicle presenters’)
At this point, I’m sure that some of the other forum users out there will be able to add to my list in……
HELPING US TO HELP YOU:-
Take advantage of the post-dating facility. It gives everyone breathing space should the car fail, for example if parts need to be ordered. When it passes, it costs you no more and you could drive away with a certificate for 13 months. (less a day)
Please ensure enough fuel. The engine has to be run for much of the test, not just the emissions check.
Check your oil and coolant etc; we can’t proceed if the levels are too low. Just tell us if you are happy for us to deal with any short-comings.
Do we have a key for your fuel cap? We need to check the sealing arrangement. (you’d be surprised how often we are left with a spare set of keys and the key we need is missing!)
Please don’t be late for your appointed time. Some test stations schedule their work very carefully.
Tell us if it is overdue for a proper service. We are especially interested in things like the cambelt as failure could cause a lot of damage.
Please leave any special instructions with reception as a note left in the car may be inadvertently overlooked.
VOSA (who set the standards) say we must fail the car if the drivers view of the road is obscured so please remove all ’dangly’ things, non-essential stickers, sat-nav brackets and the like. Thanks!
Some people do not realise that a service and an MoT are two different things and that periodically your car will require both.
Read the advisory notice and do not hesitate to ask if you would like it explaining further. We may report items that are not a part of the test.
If it is too dirty to inspect, including underneath, you may need to clean it first & if you are not sure about something, like for example the chip in your windscreen, pop in before the test and we will try and advise you in advance.
Thanks!
