I'm preparing a 1926 Chevrolet convertible for the MOT. Its a LHD US import Currently it has 1 centred rear light (no other rear light) Simple headlights without dip (6 volt) Side lights set back on the scuttle sides Hand operated wiper - no washers No brake lights, trafficators, number plate lights, reflectors. It has rod operated rear wheel brakes only - with an external brake band gripping a drum attached to the rear wheels. The hand brake operates an internal brake band expanding inside the same drum. All of these items are original as the car was delivered. What improvements (if any) are required for the UK MOT? Any help welcome.

Hi Keith welcome to the forum, there is a few issues here but before we start to answer any questions i have to ask you,Will the car be used at night or in reduced visibility ?as this may reflect towards certain requirements, Due to the age of the car it wont have to come up to the modern day requirements and may be exempt from certain standards The best idea would be to have browse through the INSPECTION MANUAL But let us know how you are going to use the car

It will be used for daytime driving only going to and from shows and local sightseeing runs. I'd be daft to try nightime motorway driving (say) in this car, Thanks for your interest, John Keith

1) if it has not got 2 front and 2 rear position lamps permanently fitted as standard its a pass, (the centered rear lamp is not a position lamp ) 2)operation of wiper is OK as you have a control.
3)washers are not a problem if the screen opens (the one i tested did)or you have some other means of having a adequate view
4)headlamps are not needed if you have no front or rear position lamps. besides it was built before 1 Jan 1931 so it does not need them, the ones you have fitted are OK anyway as long as they dip which we know as there is no main beam
5)stop lamp not required until 31 Jan 1936 so you are OK there
6)indicators not needed until 31 Jan 1936 so you OK there
7)number plate lamps not needed if you have no front or rear position lamps
8)rear reflectors not needed if you have no front nor rear position lamps
9)parking brake will be OK as long as it reaches its efficiency
10)service brake (foot brake)will be OK as long as it meets its efficiency
hope this helps as i based some answers only on the info given, just ensure that you take steps to show that the car will only be used during the day and take some tips from the testers manual,, section one as the information column will come in handy, Do you have a test station in mind were to take it as it might be a good idea to get to know the tester there and have a chat . If not were always glad to help here

Nitros thanks very much for your advice. I'm way up on the Scottish Borders so its unlikely your within local driving distance. The local tester already tests a 1902 American car so should be familiar with oddballs like mine! Regards, John Keith
