nothing too drastic, just a cost cutting exercise could do with a new printer though, the old dot matrix is on it's last legs. lol. ;D and cant remember the last time i looked at the hard copy manuals.

iv just wrote to them with some questions regarding this. yes it`s cost cutting but then its being put on us,and we are already struggling what with all new cost rises.
regarding hard copy`s what if there is something your unsure of then you`d have to leave the test to go check the pc? also we`d either have to pay seimens to use the phone line(costs)or ge our own in(again costs) as for having to print everything on a plain white paper how do we print the information on the rear of the pass`s or fails. iv sent off an email to them so lets see what they have to say, but if its anything like the trams in edinburgh it will go through no matter what, guess its time to start chraging full price`s for mot`s whuich in turn might drop out numbers down.

hi mike, i really don't think anything we say to VOSA will make any difference to what they have decided to do but we must at least try, and not become complacent and do nothing. maybe we can all compare responses from VOSA if and when we get them.

Looking at the proposals it seems more of passing over Siemens costs to us NOT a saving to VOSA. I suspect Siemens are trying to renege on their original contract with VOSA. Not a profitable as they thought.
Item 1 – Removal of dedicated phone lines. I assume stations that do not have a dedicated lines pay for the calls or are they on a free phone number? Anyone know which applies and if payable the cost per connection.
We have a dedicated line. If this proposal is passed this could cost us the phone calls/line rental thus increasing Siemens profit UNLESS we are going to see a reduction in the slot fee.
Item 2 – Stop producing Hard copy Inspection Manuals and Guides. No problem with that.
Item 3 - Reduce service desk hours to 8am-6pm Some stations do test outside these times, what are they to do if the system fails?? 24/7 support must have been written into Siemens contract. Their fault for signing it.
Item 4 - Stop Public Enquiry phone response service No problem with that.
Item 5 - Change service desk number to a national number Again another pass of Siemens costs onto us.
Item 6 – Move from pre-printed forms to plain paper documents This could be real nasty. First if the blank paper printing is going to be black on white customers are going to be very confused.
If they are going to supply a colour laser printer the running costs will be astronomic. Whilst I buy the dot matix printer ribbon I know I can (or could) get these for free. Under these proposals it says Paper and Toner would be purchased via the MOT Catalogue on the VTS device. Hmmmm we all know the "over the top" prices quote for replacement VTS components.
I am all in favour of cutting waste but these proposals are all about reducing Siemens costs and increasing ours.

If Siemens contract is up for renewal, then VOSA will give them anything they ask for, because if Siemens pull out of the scheme, there will be no MOT testing, as you can be certain VOSA have not got a backup system.

I don't think they would have been so short sighted would they? Surely there would be something in the "Contract" that permits VOSA a "Cooling Off Period" to find another Service Supplier? Dave
