Hi guys, my Vauxhall Corsa B has just failed its MOT test, the reasons for failure are as follows:
001 Nearside Windscreen Wiper not operating over a large enough area to give an adequate view [8.2.1c]
002 Offside front Brake hose ferrule excessively corroded [3.6.B.4e]
003 Steering system has excessive free play detected at the steering wheel (steering rack fitted) [2.2.A.1b]
In the worst case scenario, what could I expect to pay to right these faults? I’m a little suspicious, as the steering has always felt the same, but I don’t know. Can’t say I liked the fact that the MOT tester was eating his lunch while conducting the test! Didn’t seem very professional.
Oh they also said, they wouldn't be able to tell what was causing problem three, as they need to investigate it.

Hi Chippie Can't comment on price as each garage I would say will be different. In regards to number 1; the blade is either too small or the sweep rate across the swept area is seriously reduced. I have had many worn wiper arms on the Corsa B's, but never had one so bad that I failed it. number 2; the brake hose ferrules on the fronts of Corsa's can be quite badly corroded behind the protective rubber boot. I have had them so bad that just turning the steering on full lock the brake hose has detached. Without a photo to see it I can only advise they can be quite bad. number 3; Excessive steering free play detected at the steering wheel. Much has been said about this in the past on this forum about opinions, so here is my opinion. Put a chalk mark at 6 Oclock on the steering wheel then gently turn the steering wheel leftwards and rightwards until you feel resistance in the steering wheel to move. If there is wear present in any column couplings or the rack pinion, but very doughtful of that in my opinion, then free play will be felt and met back resistance to continue turning the steering wheel. If you experience this use a ruler or tape measure and measure how much free play you see at the steering wheel, which should be <13mm to pass the test. If you experience no free play then while lightly turning the steering wheel leftwards and rightwards, look at the drivers side front road wheel while turning the steering wheel and see if you experience any noticeable steering wheel movement before the road wheel moves, if not there is possibly nothing wrong on the drivers side, then the passenger side is more difficult, but you could also jack up the car so the front wheels are off the ground and shake each road wheel at 3 O clock and 9 Oclock, then see if you experience any free play in the steering rack track rods arms Its not something that is easy to explain on a forum so can be quite confusing to a layperson Daveg

Could be a worn lower universal joint at base of steering column play at inner rack joints or the rack itself worn,it would take some investigating but it should,nt take that long.get a second opinion from a different garage if your uncertain mate.

Cheers Dave and Alex
Dave: I will have a little go at that self-test tomorrow and post what happened.
Alex: If I'm still adamant that its unfair, I will see about going to another garage.
When I first had her MOT'd, I had an advisory notice for the front anti-roll bar: 'Front anti-role bar corroded but not seriously weakened. Yet on my last test and this test, it has never been picked up on.
It all seems hit and miss with a lot of things, unless it’s something really dangerous and obvious.

To be honest I personally advise a lot of things if there obviously in an advisable condition,it informs the presenter of any faults that have not yet reached the point of failure and it,s there to protect us.a an example if. Tyre say only just passes the test leaves the garage then gets stopped by the police who say the tyre is worn yes thi may be the case but it has met the limit set out in the mot manual, which are different to construction and use regs, therefore if you returned to the garage to question this I/we could point out that the tyre was strongly advised replacement but still met the required mot test standard limits.i see a lot of anti roll bars that are corroded but have not been deemed as seriously weakened,if in doubt get a second or a third opinion at least that way you know where you stand.
