I've just went for my 2nd NTTA exam failed the first one by one mark. When I took the exam today I was shocked, nothing I studied in the fundamental of mechanics (best book for the NT exam) or my experience has a mechanic and working in a MOT station could help with some of the truly ridiculous questions that I was asked. All the sample questions you download of the Internet will no longer help with the new test papers they have introduced. The previous set of NT exam questions at least made sense but these, I've got three examples listed below
A "swage" in the bonnet is least likely to have the following effect? improve rigidness inhibit the corrosion process provide sound deadening _____
What of the following determines the maximum size of a trailer you are allowed to tow? The size of your engine The gross weight of your vehicle _____ _____
In a emergency braking instance it would be ideal if? The front wheels locked The rear wheels locked All the wheels locked None of the wheels locked
The blanks are answers that I can't recall but they were easily crossed off as possible answers. Out of the three questions listed and focusing on the first two, what the hell have they got to do with MOTs?
The last time I checked we were not issuing advisories or examining the "swage" in the bonnet of any car nor where we doing MOTs on cars with trailers attached? what is the point of these questions, out of the 60 listed, at least 35 were like this, having no relation to the MOT test at all.
This is appalling, I'm going to seek legal advice on this has I fail to see how these two questions are relevant to being a MOT tester, I hate to say this but it certainly looks like I'm gonna have to wait 2 years to take my test again.
P.S I will post the sample questions with all the answers, right after this post for those it may help.

Out of the questions I've posted above your likely to have around 3 - 5 similar to the ones above, in the old tests which they were issuing a month or so ago, you could have gotten 20 of the above questions in your exam.

the questions aren't aimed at MOT testing they're aimed at determining your level and diversity of motor vehicle technology knowledge to decide whether you have enough knowledge to carry on the course
you wouldn't have failed on just one question though surely? 60% pass rate isn't it?

Thats how i see it.a friend of mine has just completed his,but he did fail the qualifier the first time.he isnt a qualified mechanic so i think thats why he failed it first time round.in my opinion you should be a qualified mechanic to MOT cars or at least know how everything works.

i am a skilled mechanic and fully fledged tester on all classes, i specialise in testing and the ntta mock exam is examples only, you need to know all areas of vehicle technology, most of the questions do have a reason regarding the test if you look at it mechanicaly, you said you failed on one answer, well in most sections you need say 4 out of 5 and others you need 3 out of 5 and so on, you must of got a section where you needed at leat 3 out of 5 and got 2 correct, you can get all the others perfectly correct, but in each section there is a specified pass mark, and you fell down on one answer, bad luck matey but the rules are the rules i.m afraid. better luck next time.

never take any notice of anybody giving you ntta exam papers as they change all the time, say you take the test and fail the next one you will take will be entirely different, hope this helps,
